Planting your own vegetable garden is a wonderful way to add color to your landscape and nutrition to your dinner table. Choose from a variety of edibles, like lettuce, cilantro, and carrots, to create a unique arrangement that is as beautiful to admire as it is delicious to eat. Whether you’ve always wanted a garden of veggies at home or you’ve never even considered it until right now, now is the time to get started!

Thanks to Long Island’s versatile growing season, you can start a garden from seeds or plants, but we do recommend using established plants from our greenhouse at White Post Farms, whenever possible, to ensure excellent results. Plants that we do not recommend starting from seed, because the season is not long enough for them to mature, are: peppers, eggplant, tomatoes, kale, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, and celery.

So where will your vegetable garden go? When choosing a location, consider how much light the area gets throughout the day, as this will determine what kinds of edibles you can plant.
